Hello and welcome to my ePortfolio
My name is Ariana Kelly and I am currently in my 4th year at the University of Victoria completing my Bachelor of Education. I am passionate about teaching young minds and have a keen focus on the Elementary Curriculum. As a future educator, I strive to provide an inclusive environment which allows students to collaborate with others, explore their inquiries, and foster a lifelong love of learning.
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is constantly evolving while adapting to the new education standards and varying needs of the child. I believe every child is unique and must have a stimulating environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. I aspire to cultivate a safe and inclusive atmosphere where students are invited to share their ideas, and are supported to explore their inquiries and take risks.
A teacher is a role model, who will act as a guide to children who are beginning to learn about themselves and the world around them. I will assist my students in accepting and expressing themselves, as well as embracing the differences of others. My classroom environment will be a caring community where students are free to speak their mind and develop a love of learning.
As an educator, I will provide my students with a curriculum that fulfills the needs of each child, encourages and supports varying learning styles, incorporates student interest, and allows for both collaborative and individual work which engages and activates student learning.
Why Do We Teach?
When I am asked the question why do I teach? There are many reasons that come to mind. There is an unexplainable joy watching a child make a discovery, and see that metaphoric light bulb turn on; there is nothing more rewarding than to have the opportunity to be a small part of a child's lifelong learning journey.
In the classroom, it is important to acknowledge the curriculum standards and adapt the competencies and big ideas to provide meaningful and engaging learning opportunities that are relevant to the students and their lives. I recognize the impact teachers have in helping to guide and shape a student’s future. The elementary years in schooling help to establish good work habits and social, emotional, mental, physical, and intellectual development. An exceptional teacher serves as a guide, role model, and support system. I hope to have an impact on my student’s lives to help them discover their talents, passions, strengths and weaknesses, and teach them about creativity, individuality, and acceptance. I am fascinated and enamoured by a child's zest for life, their creativity, imagination and enthusiasm for learning. We can learn so much from children, and as I teach I know my students will teach me as well.
